Letter From the Director

                                                                                                                               Dr. Ahmed Yehia Rashed

When I first started working at the British University in Egypt in 2008, I proposed the idea of establishing a center of Sustainability and Future studies to the university. At that time the sustainable development system was not as clear as it is now. After the United States conference in September 2015, and the Climate Change Conference in Paris November 2015, the Prof. Dr. President of the University told me that I should start the unit as a part the department, then depending on the achievements of the unit, the University will discuss whether It is necessary to establish the center or not.

Therefore, the Sustainable Future Medium Cities Conference in November 2010 was a futuristic vision for the sustainable development, which could be currently, included in the necessary studies and researches that Egypt needs in the self-building stage however; it was not made use of as it should have been.

The conference was connected to a competition for the sustainable future medium cities, and the ideas and scenarios of the 3 axes from the proposed passage of development and reconstruction, for the renowned scientist Farouk Al Baz.

Then, there was the revolution. Along with establishing the center in March 2011 and, there was the Taking Leave competition. Searching for the builders of the future Egypt, before thinking about building the future Egypt. It resulted in 35 new points that accepts the livelihoods in 95% of Egypt’s desert, to be a developmental sustainable dimension for Egypt’s narrow valley which is limited to only 5% of its land.

The proposed scenarios gave space for seminars and conferences in Universities all over Egypt, and the world, and for a new way of thinking, and writing the history of the future. The center and the British University’s vision became published, and participated in a lot of conferences, In China, Korea, Texas US, England, Italy, Germany, Jordan, Syria, UAE, Amman, and all of the universities in Egypt.

Then it was the stage to start cooperating with the important institutions, and the engineers syndicate in Hope and Work Olympics, to build Suez Canal Region’s people and societies. It resulted in ideas and scenarios that assure the sustainable development dimension, and it was published in several scientific magazines and in the media. Today the center and the British University hold the responsibility of raising a few national issues including:

·        The conference of Sustainable Mega Projects: (Chance -Change-Challenge).

·        The Intellectual property rights of the Egyptian heritage issue, before those who benefit from our heritage in the whole world.

·        The participation in the celebration of the 50 years anniversary, since moving the temples of Abu Simbel.

·        The attempt to employ science, scientific research, and the Graduation projects in dealing with the challenges of our national issues, as well as the thinking of sustainable development.

The journey has begun, but it still needs a lot of effort to elevate with Egypt, and the British University takes sustainability into account and recognizes the value and importance of future studies.
